The most commonly used varieties of Echinacea are Echinacea purpurea, more commonly known as the Purple Coneflower or Eastern Purple Coneflower, Echinacea angustifolia, also known as the Narrow-leaf Coneflower and Echinacea pallida, Pale Purple Coneflower. The genus name is derived from the Greek word echino, meaning "spiny", due to the plants spiny central disk. Family: Echinacea is a genus consisting of nine species of flowering plants in the Family Asteraceae. The family includes Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea atrorubens (Topeka Purple Coneflower), Echinacea laevigata (Smooth Coneflower, Smooth Purple Coneflower), Echinacea pallida (Pale Purple Coneflower), Echinacea paradoxa (Yellow Coneflower, Bush's Purple Coneflower), Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea sanguinea (Sanguin Purple Coneflower), Echinacea simulata (Wavyleaf Purple Coneflower), and Echinacea tennesseensis (Tennessee Coneflower). Origination: All the different varieties of Echinacea are wildflowers and native to North America.
