It is said that those who have sage in their gardens have no need for a doctor.
Sage (from the latin salvare which means "to save") has, since antiquity, been considered the universal panacea and was well-recognized by the Greeks.
The leaves are rich in flavonoids and essential oils which explains its spicy taste and aromatic smell.
Sage helps increase the secretion of bile and therefore acts as a choleretic.
It has a relaxing and anti-spasmodic effect on the stomach and intestine muscles.
The essential oil also acts as an antiseptic.
These properties are particularly useful for digestive problems such as slow and difficult digestion, flatulence, intestinal fermentation and gas.

Sage contains "plant" oestrogens and can so be recommended to women who suffer from irregular and painful periods and also during the menopause to reduce hot flushes. The essential oil acts on the sudoriferous glands which help reduce sweat formation which can be excessive during the menopause.
